Canadian Daryl Perry has been a full-time luthier since 1982. Early in his career, he was introduced to the central ideas of the Torres-Hauser school by the famous luthier Jose Romanillos. He has been working with these ideas ever since, refining his understanding of them and developing the craftsmanship that makes them "work". Perry has received a number of awards for his work, allowing him time to do historical and practical research in Europe and North America. As well as the classical guitar, he has been interested in historical "period" instruments and in the past has built Renaissance and Baroque lutes. In 1994, two of his guitars were displayed at Canada's national museum, the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Hull, Quebec. Over the past two decades, a number of prominent guitarists have performed on Perry guitars including: Fábio Zanon (Brazil), Marcin Dylla (Poland), Johann Fostier (Belgium), Jerome Ducharme (Canada), Paolo Pegoraro (Italy). The late Roland Dyens recorded two CDs on a Perry guitar ("Sor and Giuliani" from 2006 and "Naguele Tempo" from 2008).

This particular instrument is very inspired by Torres - although not a reproduction per se, it has elements found in various Torres instruments both structurally and aesthetically - particularly in the elegant and slightly understated style of Torres in his second-epoch, with elegant yet simple banded purfling, a beautifully understated rosette with diamond-shaped mosaics enclosed by red/green ovals, and a rounded heelcap. Perry's craftsmanship is clean and perfectly executed, making this a very charming guitar to behold. Sound is lush, warm and loose - akin to a great Torres that has been well-played and aged. Even when new, Perry's guitars are known to have a an older, played-in, "antique" quality to the sound, and with half a decade of regular use, this guitar has plenty of old-world charm. Impressive volume and great balance round this instrument off as a very desirable example of this great maker's work.
