Haruka Lee records at GSI

GSI recently welcomed Haruka Lee to its showroom for a recording session featuring a program of 19th- and 20th-century guitar works. Haruka is known for a clear and focused approach, and his selections highlighted both lyrical writing and more technical repertoire.

She performed Fantasia on the Themes of La Traviata by Francisco Tárrega on a 2025 Fructuoso Zalapa. Based on themes from Verdi’s opera, the piece moves through several contrasting sections, combining lyricism and virtuosity. Lee kept the main themes clear while connecting the shifts in texture and tempo.

She also played Tarantella by J. K. Mertz on a 2025 Liuteria Frignani. The piece follows the fast dance rhythm typical of a tarantella, with continuous motion and repeated patterns. Haruka maintained a steady pulse and clear articulation, shaping the dynamics with sensibility.

From the Latin American repertoire, she performed Vals, Op. 8 No. 4 by Agustín Barrios on a 1965 Ignacio Fleta. The piece is built on a flowing waltz rhythm with a prominent melodic line. Haruka kept the melody forward while maintaining balance with the accompaniment.

She included Cançó del Lladre by Miguel Llobet on a 2025 Gerardo Centonze. Based on a Catalan folk song, the piece is direct and centered on the presentation of the melody. Haruka allowed the tune to remain simple and clear, playing the harmonics section with deep sensibility.

The program concluded with Usher Waltz by Nikita Koshkin on a 2025 Elias Bonet. Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher, the piece uses shifting harmonies and textures to create tension. Lee kept the structure defined while connecting the changes in tone and dynamics.
