David Starobin - New Works and GFA Hall of Fame

On Saturday, June 4, guitarist David Starobin, joined by pianist Vassily Primakov, premiered new works by Starobin and William Bland. The concert took place in Denmark’s Carl Nielsen Museum (Odense), featuring two works based on themes by Nielsen. Starobin’s “Variations on a Theme by Carl Nielsen” was composed in 2010, for solo guitar. The eleven minute composition is based on Nielsen’s “Song Behind the Plow” (Sang bag Ploven). The work is published by Editions Wilhelm Hansen. William Bland’s “Variations on a Danish Folk Song” is based on Nielsen’s “Underlige Aftenlufte” (Wondrous Evening Air”). More information on the concert is available here.

On June 29th Starobin and Primakov will give the US premiere of these works at the annual Guitar Foundation of America Convention in Columbus, Georgia.  (At the same convention Starobin will be inducted into the GFA’s “Hall of Fame”, as they present him a Lifetime Achievement Award.)
