Javier Riba, Albeniz and John Ray

Here’s a cool article that ties together a guitarist we like playing music we like on a guitar we like: Javier Riba premiering Albeniz’ ‘Almeria’ for guitar on a John Ray ‘Torres’. (Javier plays a maple one, and we just got one in that’s still being photographed, but it’s identical to this one except for maple back and sides, like the original, instead of rosewood – check out the photos of the original Torres John copied here as well).

ALMERÍA .- Tomorrow, Wednesday, at 20.30 pm in the Museum of Almería, Córdoba guitarist Javier Riba kicks off the Homage to the centenary of the death of Isaac Albéniz, which is included in the International Guitar Competition X Julián Arcas, organized by Cajamar. Admission is free until tickets sell out.

The highlight of the performance is the premiere of “Almería” played on guitar, from the second “Iberia” book by Albéniz. In addition, the guitarist from Córdoba will play other compositions created by the famous Catalan composer for piano.

In this sense, Riba says that “Albéniz’s music is inextricably linked to the guitar, but he really did not write a single note for this six-stringed instrument.”

In fact, early versions of Albeniz guitar parts are almost contemporary to the original piano. And, says Riba, “the first to discover the potential of this music for guitar was Francisco Tarrega, who died in the same year as the Catalan pianist.”

At the concert, the musician from Cordoba gave another nod to the city of Almeria, interpreting pieces by Julian Arcas, the  most important guitarist for nineteenth-century Spanish music, who also was a native of the town of Maria.

Also, in the concert organized by Cajamar, Riba plays all of these pieces on a guitar that is a faithful copy of one by Antonio Torres (KN Note: built by John Ray), a contemporary of Albéniz, built in 1892 in Almería. In this way, he attempts to produce a sound more faithful to what you may have heard at the end of the nineteenth century.

Trajectory

In his professional career Javier Riba is notable for having won awards in international competitions such as the “Francisco Tárrega” competition in Villareal, the “Paco Santiago Marín” competition in Plasencia or the “Comarca del Condado ” competition in Jaen. He was also a finalist in the “Young Performers Competition” organized by the Junta de Andalucía. Furthermore, in 2001 he received the “Award for Best Classical Guitarist In Córdoba” in the International Guitar Competition “Puente Villa Genil”. Currently, Riba is a guitar teacher at the Conservatory of Music in Córdoba.

The cycle in honor of the centenary of the death of Albéniz continue with a concert by Ara Malikian, Ivan Rijos and Juan Francisco Padilla to be held in the Auditorio Maestro Padilla, Thursday, August 18, at 21.00. And there will be a third performance on June 25 by Juan Manuel Cañizares. These three concerts are co-produced by the State Society for Cultural Commemorations of the Ministry of Culture.

ALMERÍA.- El guitarrista cordobés Javier Riba inicia mañana, miércoles, a las 20.30 horas, en el Museo de Almería, el Ciclo en Homenaje al Centenario de la muerte de Isaac Albéniz, que se incluye en el X Certamen Internacional de Guitarra Julián Arcas, organizado por Cajamar. La entrada es libre hasta completar el aforo.

Lo más destacado de la actuación es que por primera vez se interpretará con una guitarra la pieza “Almería”, del segundo cuaderno “Iberia”, de Albéniz. Además, el guitarrista cordobés tocará otras piezas musicales que el famoso compositor catalán creó para piano. 

En este sentido, Riba señala que “la música de Albéniz está inexorablemente ligada a la guitarra, aunque realmente no escribió ni una sola nota para este instrumento de seis cuerdas”. 

De hecho, las primeras versiones guitarrísticas de piezas de Albéniz son prácticamente contemporáneas a las originales pianísticas. Y es que, según Riba, “el primero en descubrir para la guitarra el potencial de esta música fue Francisco Tárrega, que incluso falleció en el mismo año que el pianista catalán”.

En el concierto, el músico de Córdoba realizará otro guiño a la ciudad de Almería, interpretando temas de Julián Arcas, el guitarrista más importante de la música española del siglo XIX, que además era natural del municipio de María.

Asimismo, Riba tocará, en el recital organizado por Cajamar, todas estas piezas con una guitarra que es una fiel copia a la que Antonio Torres, coetáneo de Albéniz, construyera en 1892 en Almería. De esta forma, se pretende conseguir un sonido más fiel al de finales del siglo XIX.

Trayectoria

Por otro lado, en su trayectoria profesional Javier Riba destaca por haber sido premiado en diferentes concursos internacionales como el “Francisco Tárrega” de Villareal, el “Paco Santiago Marín” de Plasencia o el “Comarca del Condado” de Jaén. También fue finalista en el “Concurso para Jóvenes Intérpretes” organizado por la Junta de Andalucía. Además, en 2001 recibió el “Premio Diputación al Mejor Guitarrista Clásico de Córdoba” en el Concurso Internacional de Guitarra Villa de Puente Genil. En la actualidad, Riba es profesor de guitarra en el Conservatorio Profesional de Música de Córdoba.

El Ciclo en Homenaje al Centenario de la muerte de Albéniz continuará con el concierto de Ara Malikian, Iván Rijos y Juan Francisco Padilla, que tendrá lugar en el Auditorio Maestro Padilla, el jueves, día 18, a las 21.00 horas. Y tendrá una tercera actuación el 25 de junio por parte de Juan Manuel Cañizares. Estos tres conciertos se encuentran coproducidos por la Sociedad Estatal de Conmemoraciones Culturales dependiente del Ministerio de Cultura.
