Description

Enrique Coll (1894-1978) was a key Barcelona maker who according to his label, had been a worker in the Francisco Simplicio workshop. Simplicio died in 1932, the same year his first instruments were made (we had his second guitar, from 1932 several years ago). Coll also is reputed to have helped Ignacio Fleta become established as a guitar maker early in his career as well.

This guitar has a big, robust sound, particularly for its size and weight, which are much more reminiscent of the lightweight guitars of Santos and Esteso. It has a very interesting sound - a mix of the "old world" - familiar to those who know Enrique Garcia/Simplicio and yet has a "modern" side to it as well, almost foreshadowing Fleta with its firm self-confidence, clarity and balance in every register. Instruments by this maker are quite rare, and this one in particular is in excellent and very original condition with only two repaired cracks in the soundboard (recently repaired locally here by GV Rubio) as well as on either side of the fingerboard. It has had a fresh re-fret as well so playability is perfect. Back and sides have no cracks or repairs, and finish is original. Very appealing to both collector and concert performer alike.
