David Rubio is well known for his eclectic output of fine musical instruments – in addition to guitars, Rubio was a master craftsman of Baroque "period" instruments, including lutes, viols, cellos and harpsichords. He is arguably the most important guitar maker to emerge from England, and largely regarded as the "founding father" of the British school – his instruments were played by Julian Bream very early on, and late in his career, the 8-string "Brahms" model was popularized largely by Paul Galbraith and members of the Brazilian Guitar Quartet. This particular instrument is an excellent example of his superior craftsmanship, featuring gorgeous materials including a stunning set of CSA rosewood for the back and sides and aged, dark spruce top. The rosette has a floral motif, for which he was well-known, and tuners are Rodgers (the plates have oxidized a bit, making them aged almost "vintage" in appearance). The tone is thick and rich with incredible sustain, especially in the higher registers. Sound is huge, with a thick, fat (yet clear sound), a bit like a great Rodriguez but with the clarity of a Hauser. Of the many Rubio's we've seen over the past several decades, this one is the easiest to play by far - it has a 51mm nut and plays with surprising ease. Condition is also extremely clean, apart from two small, well-repaired cracks on the lower bout of the back, the guitar is in remarkable condition for its age. We consider this instrument both a players dream and highly collectable.
