Description

Based out of Baltimore, luthier Ross Gutmeier has been building a wide range of styles over the past years. Since 2007, he has been especially enamored with the instruments of Santos Hernandez and has been experimenting with various ways of integrating the charming and alluring elements of Santos Hernandez style into his own work. This particular guitar is extremely lightweight and thinly built, and has a rosette inspired by Santos but is otherwise structurally one of Gutmeier's unique creations. Internally the thin (1.5mm average thickness) top is supported with 7 fan braces and 4 "cross straps," making it almost a sort of hybrid lattice/traditional model. Due to the very light build, it's extremely lively with an immediate attack and big, powerful sound. The quality of sound itself is fairly dark and yet firm - every note is very focused and penetrating. Due to its fast and lively responsiveness, it's very easy on the hands and almost plays by itself. It features sound ports which make it easier to hear for performers playing in acoustically challenging environments, as well as a contoured armrest on the lower bout. Overall a very impressive instrument from this well respected luthier.
