Description

Enrique Coll (1894-1978) was a key Barcelona maker who according to his label, had been a worker in the Francisco Simplicio workshop. Simplicio died in 1932, the same year as this instrument was made (it bears the very young number of 2 from his own independent shop). Coll also is reputed to have helped Ignacio Fleta become established as a guitar maker early in his career as well. This particular instrument is a "Sinopoli" model, which refers to the oval shaped soundhole, a style which became very popular in Argentina (and is still in use to this day by some Argentine builders). This idea essentially increases the vibrating surface area of the soundboard, and theoretically therefore produces "more" sound. The guitar does indeed have a big, robust sound, particulary for its size and weight, which are much more reminiscent of the lightweight guitars of Santos and Esteso. It has a very interesting sound - a mix of the "old world" - familiar to those who know Enrique Garcia/Simplicio and yet has a "modern" side to it as well, almost foreshadowing Fleta with its firm self-confidence, clarity and balance in every register. Instruments by this maker are quite rare, and this one in particular is in excellent and completely original condition with only minor playing wear. Very appealing to both collector and concert performer alike.

A hardshell case is included with this guitar.
