Description

Although not a familiar name to many, Andres Martin (1911-1977) was an extremely prolific Madrid-based builder, having built approximately 1000 instruments—guitars, laudes, and bandurrias over the course of his career. In 1935 he apprenticed with Julio Bustamante, a guitar maker from Granada who lived in Madrid and then later studied with none other than the great Marcelo Barbero. Martin is also known to have been very influenced by Santos Hernandez and Domingo Esteso as this guitar clearly attests with its loose, warm and woody quality of sound - the classic "mid-century" Spanish guitar sound that has romanced and charmed so many aficionados and lovers of the guitar over the last 75 years. This guitar has one hairline crack in the top, with two internal cleats and one hairline crack in the back, barely visible, with one small cleat. Although a classical guitar, a golpeador was added at some point to allow for rasguado strumming - in fact, as is typical of this period, this guitar could be played convincingly as either a flamenco or a classical - it has the versatility to accomodate either style. Setup work was recently done by GV Rubio - dressing the frets and setting up a comfortable action so the guitar plays and feels great. An incredible bargain for a vintage guitar by one of Madrid's lesser-known but highly skilled historical builders.
