Description

In 2010, Bob Taylor invited Pepe Romero Jr. to lead a week long workshop on building classical guitars at the Taylor Guitar facility in El Cajon, California. The project was to hand-build 4 pairs of guitars with various bracing systems - one of each pair to have a traditional Spanish heel and the other using the Taylor system. Bob Taylor selected his top 10 luthiers to participate with Pepe Romero Jr leading the way. Using Taylor wood, Pepe hand-planed all the tops to thickness and braced each of them, using plans of Santos, Rodriguez, Bouchet and others. At the end of the project, there was a party which included a cameo performance on these guitars by Pepe Romero Sr., who ended up keeping one of these guitars for himself.

This particular guitar is one of the 8 that was built that week. It follows the bracing pattern of Miguel Rodriguez with some of Pepe Romero Jr.'s modifications. Box dimensions of back and sides are also after Rodriguez/Romero. Sound is big and rich - it's clear to anyone who knows Pepe's guitars that he must have been deeply involved in its construction. It is also fitted with a Schertler resocoil pickup with XLR endpin, which is designed for acoustic guitars and features a small, lightweight condenser mic glued to the underside of top which delivers a natural, acoustic sound.

This is fantastic and versatile guitar with an fascinating backstory which is also printed in an issue of "Wood and Steel" - Taylor's print publication covering all their stories and developments. A copy is included with the guitar.
