Born in Valencia, Jaime Ribot was a luthier who worked in Barcelona at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth century. For many years he shared a workshop with Bautista Alcañiz on the calle Ancha until 1920. In addition to classical and flamenco guitars, he also made bandurrias. Contemporary with the construction of Torres guitars in Andalucia, this guitar represents a great example of the early Catalan school (which would eventually include makers like Garcia, Simplicio, Coll and Fleta). Miguel Llobet was known to be a fan of this maker and played on one of his instruments regularly (see photo). Emilio Pujol and Domingo Prat also played on Ribot guitars.
This guitar is in excellent condition - apart from the typical "side of fingerboard" cracks, there are only two other repaired cracks on the lower bout of the soundboard (lightly but securely patched internally with cheesecloth). Additionall the tuning machines were replaced with a high-end set of "Torres style" bronze Graf machines. It is beautifully made, most notably it features a generous amount of mother-of-pearl inlay work in the headstock, rosette, tie-block and top purfling (perhaps an influence on Simplico's aesthetic, to come a decade or so later?). It is extremely easy to play, with a lovely old-world poetic sound. Overall an extremely charming instrument - these rarely appear on the market, so this is a really special treat for us to have such an excellent example.
