Florian Blochinger Builds His Second Tigerwood Guitar for GSI!

Coming Soon

Our friend, Florian Blochinger, is currently in the process of building his next guitar for GSI. Just like the previous guitar, this instrument will have the back and sides made of tigerwood – a rare and exotic type of wood used in classical guitar making.

Florian told us that this set of tigerwood was initially acquired by his father, Edmund Blochinger, about 20 years ago. Edmund cut this set of wood during his time, however, he has never had a chance to use it for one of his instruments despite David Collett, the president of GSI, asking him for years to do it! When Edmund cut the log, he yielded about 7 sets from it. Aside from it having a very beautiful and unique color and grain, this wood is very similar in weight and density to rosewood. Edmund finally agreed to pass along this coveted wood to his son, Florian, who pestered him for quite some time to use it for his guitars.

Florian’s tigerwood guitars are among the most impressive guitars we have seen from a maker this early in their career. Soundwise, these guitars have an aggressive attack, much like a flamenco model and an extremely quick string reset, which offers the right hand the freedom to play as quickly as possible. Structurally, the soundboard is supported by a 7-fan bracing system, very similar to the 5-fan system of Miguel Rodriguez from the 1970s, but with two narrower braces added in the middle.

Check out the photo gallery below and don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions. We expect this guitar to arrive in our store in a few weeks.
