In Memoriam: Jose Oribe

It is with deep respect and a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of Jose Oribe who left us on August 17, 2026. Orbe was one of the great American classical guitar makers of the last sixty years. He was 94 years old.
Oribe began building guitars in 1962, and alongside the late Manuel Velázquez, he became one of North America's most influential luthiers of his generation. His instruments were known for a bold, rich voice and exceptional craftsmanship, often built with fine western red cedar soundboards and beautiful, carefully chosen tonewoods. Generations of concert artists and teachers sought out his guitars, among them the celebrated pedagogue Aaron Shearer, and his work continues to be treasured by players and collectors around the world. He shared his knowledge widely as well, authoring the book The Fine Guitar.
Our thoughts are with the Oribe family during this time.
