Pietro Locatto Records Moreno Torroba and Grieg at GSI

We've recently welcomed Pietro Locatto to our showroom for a recording session featuring works by Federico Moreno Torroba and Edvard Grieg. One of Italy’s leading classical guitarists, Pietro has built an international career through performances, recordings, and competition success, with a particular interest in Spanish repertoire. His recordings of music by Moreno Torroba, Llobet, and other Spanish composers have received wide critical acclaim.

While at GSI, Pietro performed the three movements of Moreno Torroba’s Sonatina: Allegro, Andante, and Allegretto. Written in 1924 and dedicated to Andrés Segovia, the work remains one of the most frequently performed pieces in the guitar repertoire. The opening Allegro introduces the work’s unmistakably Spanish character, while the Andante provides a more reflective contrast. The concluding Allegretto draws on dance rhythms and brings the piece to an energetic close. Given Locatto’s long association with Moreno Torroba’s music, the work is a natural fit in his repertoire. For these pieces he used respectively a 2025 Liuteria Frignani, 2025 Ivan Bruna and 2026 Elias Bonet guitar. 

He also performed Melodie by Edvard Grieg. Originally composed for piano as part of Grieg’s Lyric Pieces, the work is known for its simple melodic writing and intimate character. In its guitar arrangement, the music takes on a different color while retaining the feeling that has made it one of Grieg’s most popular short works. Locatto presented the piece allowing the melody to remain the main character. He recorded this performance on a 2025 Liuteria Frignani guitar.
