Successful World Premiere of Adam Del Monte’s flamenco Opera “Llantos 1492”

Friend of GSI and flamenco guitarist, Adem Del Monte, recently premiered his own original opera “Llantos 1492”. The premiere was a success with four sold out shows at the National Hispanic Cultural Center Albuquerque Journal Theatre.

Monte redefines the genre by fusing the raw intensity of flamenco’s cante jondo and dance with the grandeur of operatic voices, creating a hauntingly powerful experience. Llantos 1492 bridges cultures and musical traditions, offering a visceral work that transcends boundaries.Set against the 1492 expulsion of Jews from Spain and the enslavement of the Gitanos, the opera delves into social upheaval, resilience, and the timeless human quest for belonging. Its themes of exile and justice remain as urgent today as they were centuries ago. In a world grappling with coexistence and intolerance, Llantos 1492 resonates deeply, reminding us of history’s lessons and art's capacity to inspire dialogue and change. With its universal themes and critical acclaim, Llantos 1492 is more than an opera, it is a profound artistic statement for our time.

Adam del Monte is a trailblazer in flamenco and classical guitar, blending tradition with global influences to create a unique musical voice. A first-prize winner of the 1997 Stotsenberg International Classical Guitar Competition, he has studied under flamenco legends like Pepe "Habichuela" and Gerardo Núñez, as well as classical masters at the Royal Northern College of Music. Del Monte has recorded for Deutsche Grammophon, contributing the flamenco guitar part to Osvaldo Golijov's Grammy-winning opera Ainadamar. He has performed the work globally in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Barbican Centre.
