Adam Del Monte Returns to Record at GSI

Adam Del Monte returned to GSI to record three pieces from Spanish Impressions by Brazilian composer, Sergio Assad. Adam del Monte is a trailblazer in flamenco and classical guitar, blending tradition with global influences to create a unique musical voice. A first-prize winner of the 1997 Stotsenberg International Classical Guitar Competition, he has studied under flamenco legends like Pepe "Habichuela" and Gerardo Núñez, as well as classical masters at the Royal Northern College of Music. Del Monte has recorded for Deutsche Grammophon, contributing the flamenco guitar part to Osvaldo Golijov's Grammy-winning opera Ainadamar. He has performed the work globally in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Barbican Centre.

Here’s what Adam had to say about this piece:

“I'll be playing the three Spanish pieces by Sergio Assad, the Brazilian guitar composer. I just love these three pieces. I'll be playing Asturiana it's the first movement and what I love about it is that it has this beautiful tug of war between the simplicity and purity of an  Asturian melody which he uses and how it contrasts with a bunch of licks that are kind of modern and dissonant and there's this constant battle between them but he finds a perfect harmonic balance in terms of harmonic color and texture. "

He also recorded the beautiful and introspective second movement, Valenciana, as well fiery and energetic third movement, Andaluz, which incorporates rasgueados.

All of these pieces were recorded on a 2025 Erez Perelman classical guitar made with cedar top and CSA rosewood back and sides.
