Andrzej Grygier Records Videos for GSI’s “On Location with D’Addario” Series
We're pleased to share the latest installment in our On Location with D'Addario video series, featuring Polish guitarist and D'Addario artist Andrzej Grygier. Andrzej recorded three works on a 2025 Moonseok Choi guitar at St Bride's Scottish Episcopal Church in Glasgow. That's just a short trip from Moonseok Choi's workshop in Stirling, and the session took place before the guitar made its way to GSI.
Andrzej is one of the leading young voices of the contemporary Polish guitar school. He won the International Guitar Competition in Budapest in 2021 and reached the semifinals of the GFA International Concert Artist Competition in 2019. He now performs widely across Europe.
For this session, Andrzej chose three contrasting works:
- Federico Moreno Torroba's Arada from Suite Castellana
- Alexandre Tansman's Danza Pomposa
- Agustín Barrios Mangoré's El Último Trémolo
Arada is the lyrical middle movement of Torroba's Suite Castellana, one of the works he wrote for Andrés Segovia in the 1920s. Its gentle, singing lines are a perfect showcase for the warmth and sustain of this instrument.
Danza Pomposa closes Alexandre Tansman's Cavatina suite, also written for Segovia. Tansman was born in Łódź, so this performance brings together a Polish composer and a Polish guitarist. It is a brilliant, festive dance that shows off the guitar's clarity and quick response.
Agustín Barrios Mangoré's El Último Trémolo, also known as Una Limosna por el Amor de Dios, is often described as the Paraguayan composer's final work. Its continuous tremolo over a haunting bass line is a true test of evenness and control, and a lovely way to hear the singing treble of this guitar.
This guitar is the second instrument Moonseok has built for us since settling in Stirling. It has a spruce top and Indian rosewood back and sides. After a 2024 visit to Granada, Moonseok rethought his approach to get greater projection for larger halls. He drew mainly on a 2009 Daniel Friederich, adding his own ideas such as double sides and bracing that alternates spruce and cedar. The rosette's fish mosaic comes from his years in coastal Malmö. The result is a silky, layered sound with excellent clarity, and you can hear it fill the acoustic of St Bride's beautifully.
This guitar has since found a new home, but we continue to represent Moonseok Choi exclusively in the USA. Feel free to contact us about his upcoming instruments.
Special thanks to our partners from D'Addario for the video shoot!
