The "Coco" Guitar Takes Its Place at The Metropolitan Museum of Art

News

We've received exciting news! The Córdoba guitar built by G.V. Rubio for Disney and Pixar's "Coco" is now part of "Musical Bodies," on view at The Met Fifth Avenue (Gallery 199) through September 27, 2026. The instrument on display is dated 2017 and comes from the personal collection of the film's director, Lee Unkrich.

Why This One Matters to Us

Pixar didn't just license an existing guitar. They needed one built from scratch to match the film's design, skull-shaped headstock, abalone inlay, hand-painted filigree, hand-carved skull tuning machines. They turned to the founder of Córdoba Guitars and GSI, Tim Miklaucic, who brought luthier German Vazquez Rubio to build it. Only twenty were ever made, each with a spruce top and maple back and sides.

Both were built by German Vazquez Rubio. Note the date difference: the MET's guitar is Lee Unkrich's own, from 2017, the year the film premiered. GSI's "Coco" guitars were made in 2018 and 2020.

Played by the Cast Itself

While the guitars were at GSI, Anthony Gonzalez, who voiced Miguel, recorded on a guitar that he purchased from us. Additionally, guitarist Mak Grgić recorded two classical pieces on it as well.
