Coming Soon: Zoran Kuvač Torres SE 183 Replica in Spruce and Bird’s-Eye Maple
We are excited to share a first look at a new instrument taking shape in the workshop of Zoran Kuvač: a replica of Antonio de Torres SE 183, built with a spruce top and bird's-eye maple back and sides.
Zoran opened his workshop in Banja Luka in 1998, after gaining experience in instrument making in Serbia and attending courses with José Romanillos. His early style drew mostly on traditional Spanish makers such as Torres and Romanillos, while his more recent guitars lean toward the contemporary French school, especially the bracing of Dominique Field. This new guitar marks a return to the source of the modern classical guitar, built with the care and fine materials that have made his instruments favorites with our customers.
The "SE" in the name refers to Torres' second epoch, the period he spent working in Almería from 1875 to 1892. Maple has a special place in that story. Francisco Tárrega's 1883 Torres, SE 49, was built with flamed maple for the sides and a four-piece back, and we were once privileged to offer a remarkably well-preserved bird's-eye maple Torres from 1890, numbered SE 139. Bird's-eye maple, with its distinctive shimmering figure, gives Zoran's replica a striking appearance that honors this tradition.
Zoran's maple guitars have impressed us before. One of his past spruce and maple instruments was very responsive to both hands, with great punch and huge volume, particularly for a maple guitar. We can't wait to hear how he brings that voice to the Torres design.
Take a look at the sneak peek photos below, and stay tuned for its arrival at GSI. If you would like to be among the first to hear when it lands, contact us today.
