Eric Wang: From Youth Prodigy to 2026 GFA ICAC Winner

The classical guitar world has a new standard-bearer. American guitarist Eric Wang won the prestigious Guitar Foundation of America (GFA) International Concert Artist Competition, an achievement widely regarded as one of the highest honors in the classical guitar community. Winning the competition places Wang among an elite lineage of artists whose careers have gone on to shape the future of the instrument. The title comes with an international concert tour, a Naxos recording opportunity, and recognition as one of the world's foremost emerging classical guitarists. This award represents the culmination of years of Eric's remarkable growth.
Born and raised in San Jose, California, Eric Wang displayed exceptional musical promise from an early age. His rise through the international competition circuit has been nothing short of extraordinary. He first gained worldwide recognition by winning the GFA International Youth Competition Junior Division in 2018, before winning again in 2020, this time in the Senior Division.
His competitive résumé continued to expand with victories at the Parkening International Young Guitar Competition and the Boston GuitarFest Competition, while he also reached the semifinals of the GFA International Concert Artist Competition three consecutive times from 2022 through 2024. Those experiences prepared him for his triumphant return in 2026, where years of artistic refinement culminated in the competition's highest prize.
Beyond competitions, Wang has built a reputation as a thoughtful and versatile musician. A student of acclaimed guitarist Meng Su at San Francisco Conservatory of Music, he has balanced an elite musical career with rigorous academic pursuits, studying engineering at Stanford University. His performances reveal an uncommon combination of technical brilliance, expressive phrasing, and intellectual depth.
His artistry has also reached a wider audience through collaborations with GSI. We've featured Wang performing works such as Agustin Barrios Mangoré's "Confesión (Romanza)"and Miguel Llobet's "Scherzo-Vals," showcasing his refined tone and musical sensitivity on world-class instruments.
Winning the 2026 Guitar Foundation of America International Concert Artist Competition marks the beginning of a new chapter. As he embarks on the GFA Winner's Tour, audiences across North America, Europe, and Asia will have the opportunity to experience one of classical guitar's most compelling new artists.
Congratulations Eric!
