Jack Davisson Records Villa-Lobos at GSI

Jack Davisson recently visited GSI and recorded two of Heitor Villa-Lobos’ twelve etudes. Heitor Villa-Lobos, one of Brazil's most celebrated composers, bridged the gap between classical traditions and the rich musical heritage of his homeland. His 12 Études for Guitar (1929), commissioned by the legendary guitarist Andrés Segovia, are some of the most significant contributions to the classical guitar repertoire. These etudes showcase Villa-Lobos' deep understanding of the guitar's technical capabilities and expressive range.

The “Etude No. 1 in E Minor”, the opening piece of this set, is a technical study focused on right-hand arpeggios. Despite its pedagogical intent, the etude stands as a beautifully evocative musical work. Its steady, flowing texture creates a sense of introspection and lyricism, with melodic fragments subtly emerging within the cascading arpeggios. Jack recorded this piece on a 2010 Hermann Hauser III classical guitar made with spruce top and CSA rosewood back and sides.

“Etude No. 12” is the dramatic finale of Heitor Villa-Lobos' 12 Études for Guitar. Marked by its fiery intensity and dramatic flair, Etude No. 12 focuses on rapid chords, slurred notes, and powerful rhythmic drive. The piece is an exploration of speed and precision, with an emphasis on the fluid execution of scales across the fretboard. At the same time, it retains a musicality that transcends its technical challenges, making it as rewarding to listen to as it is to perform. Jack recorded this piece on a 2023 Felip Conde Crespo "Negra" flamenco guitar made with spruce top and African rosewood back and sides.
