Warsaw Guitar Trio performs the Overture from Mozart's 'The Marriage of Figaro'

Community

The Omni Foundation recently shared a performance by the Warsaw Guitar Trio of the Overture from Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro), arranged for three guitars. Filmed at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, the performance features Zuzanna Bonarska, Wiktoria Bloch, and Wojciech Niemotko.

Premiered in 1786, The Marriage of Figaro is one of Mozart’s most celebrated operas. Based on the play by Pierre Beaumarchais, the story follows a day of schemes, misunderstandings, and disguises as Figaro and Susanna try to outwit Count Almaviva. The overture, heard at the beginning of the opera, has become one of Mozart’s most recognizable orchestral works. Remarkably, it contains none of the opera’s melodies, instead setting the stage with its rapid pace and sense of anticipation.

Transferring such a work to three guitars presents a unique challenge. The arrangement must capture the energy and transparency of Mozart’s orchestral writing while distributing the musical lines across three instruments. The trio handles these demands effectively, passing themes between players and maintaining the drive that makes the overture so distinctive.

The Warsaw Guitar Trio has gained recognition through international chamber music competitions and performances, bringing together three musicians from Poland’s strong classical guitar tradition. In this performance, the ensemble’s coordination and attention to detail allow Mozart’s music to be recognizable to the listener while offering a different perspective on a familiar masterpiece.
