Enrique García 1868-1922: Constructor de Barcelona, by Jacques Vincenti & Alberto Martinez
In the late nineteenth century Enrique García, born in Madrid, settled in Barcelona, a Modernista city experiencing extraordinary urban development and artistic fervor. García brought with him a wealth of expertise inherited from Antonio de Torres via José and Manuel Ramírez. What distinguished his guitars, which were concert instruments, was his asymmetrical eight-strut bracing. He was a prize-winner at the 1893 international exposition in Chicago ‘for sweetness of tone quality’ and ‘for beauty of finish’. Domingo Prat, Francisco Tárrega, Miguel Llobet and Emilio Pujol all played on his guitars and helped establish his reputation in both Spain and Latin America.
