The Last "Cosmic" Guitar from Marc Dickinson

Oklahoma luthier Marc Dickinson is currently building what will likely be the final guitar in his celebrated Cosmic series. The materials are gorgeous as always. For the top, Marc used a set of German spruce, while the back and sides are made of African Blackwood. True to form, Marc has never built the same Cosmic twice, and this last one brings a few new touches of its own.

He left off the back strip to keep the sapwood undivided, and in its place carried the Cosmic purfling from the top onto the back, a look he feels suits the African Blackwood especially well. The internal bracing on the back has also been reworked for a livelier response.

Marc holds multiple advanced degrees in science, including a PhD in physics, and his fascination with astrophysics and astrophotography has shaped every Cosmic guitar, from rosettes inspired by his own images of distant star clusters to "diffraction line" purflings echoing starburst patterns. He has been building guitars for about 20 years, moved into a full-time workshop in 2019, and GSI has been his exclusive reseller since 2023.

Marc expects to ship this final Cosmic within four to five weeks and will send more photos as it nears completion. Stay tuned!
