Biography:
Evan Kingma is a Canadian guitar maker whose work is rooted in the traditional Spanish school of guitar construction. His path into lutherie began in 2015, when he traveled to Granada, Spain to take a one-month course with master luthier Stephen Hill at the European Institute of Guitar Making. What began as a short course quickly evolved into a five-year apprenticeship in the heart of the Spanish guitar-making tradition.
During his time in Granada, Kingma built numerous instruments alongside Hill, working on both the Model 2 and the Master Model guitars and assisting with teaching at the institute. His experience immersed him deeply in traditional Spanish methods, while later correspondence with French luthier Bastien Burlot broadened his understanding of guitar acoustics and design.
After completing his apprenticeship, Kingma returned to Canada to establish his own workshop. Today he builds a small number of instruments each year, combining authentic Spanish construction techniques with modern aesthetic ideas.
