Description
This 2016 Jesús Bellido "Homenaje a Torres" is a spruce and maple classical guitar from the Bellido family workshop in Granada, Spain (Opus No. 7 on the label), built as a tribute to Antonio de Torres.
Jesús Bellido and the Bellido Workshop in Granada
From one of Granada's most famous workshops, Jesús Bellido is a member of one of that city's leading families of guitar makers. His father, Manuel López Bellido, and his late uncle, José López Bellido, are highly regarded makers who, along with Antonio Marín Montero, are considered founders of the modern Granada school. Jesús began his career in the family workshop as a young teenager. Within a few years he was building guitars under his own name, and he has become known and respected for traditional, small-bodied classical and flamenco guitars, typical of the Granada school.
A Homage to Torres: Sound and Playability
This lightweight guitar – a very charming homage to Torres – has a strong bite that is matched with a subtle sweetness, which we think would make it the perfect concert-level classical guitar for the serious player. It will appeal greatly to players with smaller hands thanks to its noticeably thin and flat neck profile, as well as the slightly more compact "Torres" body proportions. Although used, it is in great condition with no prior damage or repairs, only some very mild wear in the finish.
Background
The Bellido Family: Guitar Makers in Granada
The story of the Bellido Workshop began in 1957, when Manuel López Bellido started building guitars under the guidance of the Granada master Eduardo Ferrer. In 1960 he and Antonio Marín Montero set up shop together as partners, building guitars under their own names and jointly under the "Montero-Bellido" label, and a whole generation of Granada makers passed through their doors as apprentices. Manuel taught his brother, José López Bellido (1943–2024), and later his own sons, Jesús and Mauricio. Together with Antonio Marín, the Bellidos are regarded as founders of the modern Granada school.
One Family, Individual Makers
Today the workshop is run by Manuel, Jesús and Mauricio. Each of them builds his own guitars entirely by hand – from choosing the wood to the final setup – while sharing the same family standards of quality and care. Manuel's brother José went on to run his own separate workshop on Gomérez, the street that climbs from the city center up to the Alhambra, where he built classical and flamenco guitars for decades.
