Description
This 2026 Oscar Muñoz is a new classical guitar with a cedar top and Makassar ebony back and sides, made by hand in Granada, Spain, with a Nasrid star rosette in brown and yellow.
Oscar Muñoz Cedar and Makassar Ebony Classical Guitar
Oscar paired a cedar soundboard with a beautiful, exotic set of Makassar ebony for the back and sides, and the result is a beautifully designed and built guitar. Ebony appears again in the tapering central strip of the back, the head veneer and the foot inlay where the sides meet at the bottom.
Taracea: A Medieval Granada Technique
Those details frame the striking star-shape design of the rosette, inspired by the motifs found all over Granada in the countless frescos and mosaics, tile work and flooring that grace its architecture. Oscar tells us it follows “taracea”, a medieval technique native to the city.
Sound
The sound matches the guitar’s dark, chocolatey look – deep and rich, with great warmth across the entire register – and there is plenty of volume too: this guitar could easily fill a concert hall of any size.
Background
Oscar Muñoz: From Cabinetmaking to Guitar Making in Granada
Before pursuing guitar making as a career, Granada luthier Oscar Muñoz worked for 20 years in cabinetmaking and carpentry. This gave him a natural advantage when he turned to guitar making in 2013, when he took construction courses given by Stephen Hill and Pablo Requena.
A Circle of Young Granada Makers
Oscar also formed a close camaraderie with a group of young Granada makers and players, including Sergio Valverde, Federico Udini, and Javier and Sixto Moreno, and he is grateful for the advice and support of the Bellido family, who encouraged him early in his work.
Prize Winner in Granada
After several years of working at his craft, Oscar was awarded second prize (shared with Julia Wenzel) at the first edition of the prestigious Antonio Marín Montero Guitar Building Competition, held in Granada, Spain, in October 2017.
