Barnett Tuners are based out of Berlin, Germany. These are high-quality, durable machine heads that have been subjected to rigorous testing to ensure consistency, longevity, and optimal performance. Although the process is time-consuming, it's essential for understanding how their tuners hold up over time and under various conditions. To simulate real-world usage, they developed a program that counts button rotations by applying a 7.5 kg load, which represents the average string tension of a classical guitar set. According to an online survey they conducted, most players change strings about once every six weeks. Typically, each string is wrapped around the roller three times. Given their 18:1 gear ratio, it takes 18 button turns to produce one full rotation of the string roller. This means that bringing a string up to pitch requires approximately 54 button rotations. It's worth noting that on an actual instrument, the full 7.5 kg load is only present once the string is at pitch—so this test is on the conservative side. In this test, they ran over 1,500 full cycles. One cycle is defined as 54 button rotations forward (to simulate stringing up) and 54 backward (to simulate removing strings). For conservative estimation, they based their calculations on a string change every 4 weeks instead of 6, which translates to 12 changes per year. By that measure, 1,500 cycles represent about 125 years of regular use. In total, the button was rotated over 162,000 times under tension. Following the test, they conducted a thorough inspection and performance evaluation of the tuners. They were flawless—performing even better than when first assembled. Barnett Tuners are therefore very proud to offer what we consider true legacy tuners, designed to last a lifetime and beyond.
