Born into Guitar Making

Sergio Pérez is one of those luthiers who was literally born into it. His father, Teodoro Pérez, made guitars at the Ramírez shop (his guitars are stamped GPM) for 25 years before setting out on his own, and Sergio pretty much grew up in his father's shop. From an early age he enjoyed watching his father work – he had a workbench at home, and in his free time he made guitars for himself. He officially joined his father in 1998, at the age of 18, learning both the craft of building guitars and the business of it as well.

Guitars Under His Own Name

After fourteen years as an apprentice to his father, Sergio began making his own guitars alongside him, and we are very pleased to be representing Sergio in the US. Sergio's guitars are exceptional examples of the Madrid school, as expected. He names his models after cities in Spain – the "Segovia" is named after the city, not the famous guitarist – while his brother-in-law, Marco Tejeda, names his after the neighborhoods of Madrid. When GSI President David Collett visited the workshop, he filmed the whole family at work (watch the video).
