Mr. Masaki Sakurai is the nephew of the greatest luthier from Japan, Masaru Kohno, with whom he worked with, and learned the craft of guitar making. Although clearly influenced by his uncle, Sakurai also infuses his own personality into his guitars. A modest look at this instrument reveals a beautiful design and exacting execution. One notable feature is the "RF" (raised fingerboard) which was designed to allow the player greater access to the upper registers of the fingerboard. Additionally, the double ebony reinforcing strips in the back of the neck allow for a very accurate setup, so the action is easy even to a heavy hand, without buzzing. Many of the design elements including bridge shape and head design are Sakurai's. This eclectic combination of styles produces what we believe to be a very tasteful, yet modern instrument. The spruce top has a clear and clean sound while still retaining the depth and warmth of its cedar counterpart. There is plenty of power here for any concert situation, including ensemble settings. Although used, the guitar is in excellent condition with one small (almost invisible) crack in the lower bout of the back (recently repaired by GV Rubio). There is some minor finish wear as well which is normal for a guitar of this age which has been regularly played. Overall, a very unique and charming instrument.
