German luthier Stefan Nitschke has become known for building quality instruments in the Torres/Hauser tradition, however for this guitar, Stefan decided to make it a tribute to the iconic builder Santos Hernandez. As with Nitschke's other models, rather than being a literal copy of a specific guitar, this instrument is inspired by several Santos guitars, particulary from the era of the 1930s. Stefan also chose some of his choicest materials for this guitar, in particular the back and sides are a breathtaking set of CSA rosewood with plentiful amounts of lighter, yellow sapwood fused into the darker heartwood, strongly reminiscent of the wood used by Miguel Rodriguez in his "Churchdoor" instruments from the 1970s. Like a few other builders (including Jose Romanillos), Stefan likes to give names to each of his instruments, this one has been lovingly nicknamed "La Morena". Structurally it has a very traditional bracing system under the top - 7 long, thin fans that begin near the lower harmonic bar and continue almost all the way to the lining. The resulting sound is very lively with a loose, old-world dry & woody quality. Very pure, clean and clear with lyrical trebles and deep basses. What's impressive about Stefan's work is that each of his models truly capture elements of the makers he's tipping his hat to - his "Hauser" model sounds astonishingly "Hauser-like" and this model captures the essence of the Santos sound beautifully. Although this is (barely) a second-hand instrument, condition is excllent with barely any signs of prior use. Overall a stunning instrument all around.
