John Ray is one of the best luthiers working in Granada, Spain. His guitars are very much in the "Granada" style - small-bodied, lightweight, easy to play and very responsive with many nuances and colors of sound. The flamenco "blanca" model has a European Spruce top with cypress for the back and sides. The entire guitar is French polished. Ray has recently been studying a guitar by Marcelo Barbero and has incorporated many of the subtle elements into his own design which have resulted in a guitar with extremely fast response and a very full sound. Aesthetically, the guitar has an elegant simplicity which is very tasteful and refined - reminiscent of some of the most charming second epoch guitars of Torres.
This example from 2006 is easily one of the best we've ever come across. Extremely lightweight and playable, with a beautiful tone that is both lyrical and aggressive.
