Description
A 2026 "60th Anniversary" classical guitar by Teodoro Pérez, with a cedar top and African rosewood back and sides, made in Madrid, Spain – No. 2 of a limited edition of 10, with a gold and silver Toledo damascene inlay on the headstock.
Teodoro Pérez: Sixty Years of Guitar Making in Madrid
This is #2 of 10 guitars in a limited edition run, to commemorate 60 (yes – SIXTY!) years of guitar making (1966–2026) from veteran Madrid luthier Teodoro Pérez, who is still pursuing his love of his craft, as expressed in these finest of instruments he is capable of building (read our announcement of the series). Ten years ago he marked his half-century with a 50th Anniversary edition, also limited to 10 guitars.
Toledo Damascene on the Headstock
The series features the stunning addition of Toledo damascene – an intricate inlay of gold and silver on the headstock, representing a silhouette designed by Teodoro together with Raquel de la Torre Serrano of Togashi Damasquinos in Toledo, who learned the craft from her father, the damascene master Carlos de la Torre. Toledo damascene is a traditional Spanish craft from Toledo, Spain, which involves inlaying gold and silver threads and sheets into carved steel to create intricate black and gold geometric or floral designs.
A Limited Edition of 10 Guitars
The run includes guitars with spruce or cedar soundboards and back and sides of African rosewood, cocobolo or pau ferro, plus one guitar in CSA rosewood. The necks are of Honduras cedar, with ebony fingerboards, and the tuning machines are by Alessi (porcupine handles with mother-of-pearl), all finished in French polish. Of course the Pérez workshop has sourced its most prized and aged materials for this run of guitars, and is pouring its most imaginative and creative work into the inlay and design – resulting in what can only be called the limit of their creative powers, given their vast history, largely from the six decades of building in Teodoro's personal lifetime.
Cedar and African Rosewood: Sound
This guitar, the second in the series, is made of cedar and African rosewood. The sound is as bold as its appearance: the cedar gives it a thicker, fuller overtone content, with a wider body to each note. There is not a fault to be found anywhere in this instrument, be it in the craftsmanship or in the quality and quantity of sound it produces.
From José Ramírez III to a Family Workshop
We are absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity to represent a couple of these guitars and salute Teodoro on his extraordinary journey over the past sixty years – through his time with José Ramírez III, through his era with Tezanos-Pérez to his current workshop, which he now shares with his son, daughter and son-in-law. Congratulations to the Teodoro Pérez shop for producing such a profoundly beautiful instrument to celebrate the occasion!
Background
Trained in the José Ramírez III Workshop
Teodoro Pérez was born in 1952 in the province of Soria, Spain, but moved to Madrid while still very young. In 1966 he began his apprenticeship in the famed José Ramírez III workshop, where he built guitars, lutes, bandurrias and mandolins. During these years, he had the great honor to meet some of the great maestros of the twentieth century, including Andrés Segovia, Narciso Yepes and many others. In 1970, after passing the appropriate tests, and with the approval of José Ramírez, he qualified as First Official, and stamped the guitars he made with his initials GPM.
Tezanos-Pérez and a Family Workshop in Madrid
In 1991, Teodoro teamed up with fellow Ramírez veteran Mariano Tezanos, and built guitars under the name "Tezanos-Pérez" until 2005. Today he builds with his family: his son, Sergio Pérez, who has been assisting him in his work since 1998, his daughter, Beatriz, and his son-in-law, Marco Tejeda. Sergio and Marco also build guitars under their own names. GSI is proud to represent these guitars exclusively in the United States.
