Description

The "Maestro" model falls in the middle of the Perez line, and is made with top-quality materials all around, this particular guitar features a set of beautiful and dramatic African rosewood for the back and sides and spruce top which adds great clarity and balance. Being a 10-string, the additional 4 bass strings allow players of Renaissance and Baroque lute music to play period repertoire without having to transpose bass notes. The instrument also works beautifully for transcriptions of piano and orchestral music which require a wider note range. It has a typical spruce sound, very refined and clean and is very focused, dynamic and expressive - typical qualities found in this makers best instruments. Like every guitar we have seen from Perez, the set-up is superb and the attention to detail is impeccable. Although second-hand, it's in excellent condition with only some minor blemishes in the finish but is otherwise a gorgeous guitar with plenty of power and refinement, and a great choice for concert performance.

Background

Teodoro Perez was born in the province of Soria, in Spain in 1952 but moved to Madrid while still very young. In 1966 he began apprenticing in the famed Jose Ramirez III workshop, where he built guitars, lutes, bandurias and mandolins. During these years, he had the great honor to meet some of the great maestros of the twentieth century, including Andres Segovia, Narciso Yepes and several others. In 1970, after passing the appropriate tests, and with the approval of Jose Ramirez, he qualified as First Official, and stamped the guitars he made with his initials GPM. In 1991, Teodoro Perez teamed up with another fellow Ramirez veteran, Mariano Tezanos, and built guitars for many years under the name "Tezanos-Perez". Teodoro has recently entered the next phase of his career, building with his son, Sergio, who has been assisting him in his work since 1998. GSI is proud to be representing these guitars exclusively in the United States.
