Built by Spanish luthier Darío García, who won Second Prize at the seventh Antonio Marin Montero Guitar Making Competition held in Granada, Spain in July/August, 2024 for his flamenco blanca. What we have here now is a fantastic example of his flamenco negra. For this guitar, Darío selected a very old and beautiful spruce top, which is very dark and almost appears to look like cedar. Darío tells us that "due to its colour, it is more similar to a cedar top in appearance, but it is actually spruce. The reason is because it is a very old top. My father bought it from the relatives of a deceased builder. The wood dates from 1973. When I thinned the wood I thought it would lose some of the brown color it had, but that is not the case." Paired with this top is an exotic set of Kamagong, which is a fascinating wood - its appearance is almost like a hybrid between CSA rosewood and Makassar ebony with its strong striped features fused with lighter sapwood highlights. We've noticed that this wood seems to provide extra power due to it's higher density, as well as an added "velvety" character to the sound. The bindings and inlay work are understated and elegant in its simplicity - again all in the spirit of paying hommage to the mid-century Spanish flamencos which many see as the historical apex in flamenco design and style. Structurally, the bracing system borrows heavily from Barbero models with a 5-fan system with slight modifcations of Darío's. The resulting lightweight build gives the guitar great brilliance in the attack, a raspy voice and traditional woody and throaty quality of sound. Playability is a breeze with a very comfortable neck shape and low action. This is a true Andalucian flamenco by all measures.
