Flamenco phenomenon Grisha was in playing some guitars this week and we recorded some amazing videos and an interview. I’ll be posting those soon, and in the meantime here he is playing this week’s ‘Deal of the Week’ – a koa Hermanos Conde ‘Felipe V’ model, the top of the line from the Felipe V shop.

Just a heads up that you can now download ‘Valseana‘ on iTunes. Or you can preview the tracks there and buy the CD here.

I wasn’t familiar with Gitarrissima, but I like this arrangement.

I read this article over coffee, compliments of Ben Woods on Facebook. Sounds to me like they’re saying that metal is the new progressive rock, which was always the preferred genre of nerds and featured some of the best musicians in rock. I have a feeling that in the 70′s and 80′s you would have found Yes and Rush and Gentle Giant on that list. And yet for some reason I find myself not looking up Mastodon or Thrice, despite my mild and very nerdish obsession with Pynchon.

Check out the article (and the comments, which are just as entertaining and reasonably point out that the conclusion reached from the study is a bit backwards).

Here’s guitarist Luka Vlasic playing Noriyasu Takeuchi’s arrangement of ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.’ Merry Christmas everyone!

Marc Friedlander, one of our forum members, posted this today and it made my morning. He’s playing both parts of the Allegro from Christian Scheidler’s Sonata in D. I’m trying to decide whether or not I’d want myself as a duet partner.

Cecilia Zabala is a great guitarist and singer-songwriter from Argentina. She plays a 7-string and has a lovely command of harmony that reminds me a little of what the Brazilians do so well with the guitar (I know, I know, this isn’t samba or bossa, but I have a limited reference for this kind of stuff). She’s got some dates on the West Coast in February and with a little luck we’ll get her to come do something at GSI.

Just in case any of you don’t know about this guy – he’s a monster player and composer. And possibly the most relaxed-looking virtuoso I’ve ever seen play.

I love Jerry Reed. And if you search him on YouTube you find all these great bits with Chet Atkins. Don’t know why classical players never do bits. We could all learn a thing or two about showmanship from Nashville.

Here’s that most wistful of Christmas tunes – Vince Guaraldi’s ‘Christmas Time Is Here’ – played by Ben Woods, who seems to find the bright side of almost everything.
