Description
This 1965 Ignacio Fleta is a classical guitar with a spruce top and Indian rosewood back and sides, built in Barcelona in Fleta's mid-1960s spruce years.
A 1965 Fleta with the Classic Fleta Voice
Spruce over Indian rosewood – the typical Fleta choice for the period. The voice is deep and complex, with great dynamic range, good balance and a firmness in the fundamental for real projection. Here you also get the trademark Fleta darkness and mystery in the tone, a lot of power, and very good separation of voices in chords.
Playability
Fleta's slender necks of these years are often called his easiest to play, and this one is no different – comfortable in the hand for long hours of practice or performance.
Condition
The guitar does have some older, very stable repairs, including a hairline crack on the top (on the bass side, between the bridge and foot) which was repaired about 30 years ago. Some repairs to the back were done about 5 or 6 years ago by Domenic Roscioli in Adelaide, Australia. It is otherwise in great shape for an instrument with over 60 years of playing on it, and it currently plays beautifully.
A very fine example from one of the greatest and most celebrated luthiers of the 20th century, and a very desirable instrument for both collector and performer.
Background
Ignacio Fleta: Master Guitar Maker of Barcelona
For performers and collectors alike, the name Ignacio Fleta (1897–1977) ranks among the elite handful of 20th-century luthiers. Trained in Barcelona as a maker of violins and cellos, he built mainly bowed instruments from the late 1920s until 1955, when he decided to devote himself to the guitar. Countless scores of the finest players in the world have played his instruments – among them Andrés Segovia, John Williams, Angel Romero, Turibio Santos, Alirio Díaz and Marcelo Kayath.
Ignacio Fleta e Hijos: Three Generations
By the mid-1960s Fleta's sons, Francisco (1925–2003) and Gabriel (1929–2013), had become his partners in the workshop – which is why the labels from then on read "Ignacio Fleta e hijos" (Ignacio Fleta and sons). After Ignacio's death in 1977 the brothers carried on, and today Gabriel's son, Gabriel Fleta Jr., continues the family workshop in its third generation. Many dozens of Fletas have passed through our doors over the years.
