Description

This 2004 Paulino Bernabé "Flamenco Negra" is a flamenco guitar with a spruce top and CSA rosewood back and sides, made in Madrid in the workshop of Paulino Bernabé and his son Paulino Bernabé II.

A Flamenco Negra from the Bernabé Workshop in Madrid

This is a fantastic flamenco negra from the famous Paulino Bernabé workshop in Madrid. It features extremely fine and aged materials, and is appointed with intricate detailing throughout. It has a huge sound, but in addition to the enormous volume, it has the rasp and grit of a true flamenco.

Condition

Condition is excellent, with only very modest signs of playing wear. A very lively and exciting flamenco from one of the most respected workshops in Spain.

Background

Paulino Bernabé: From the Ramírez Workshop to His Own

Paulino Bernabé (1932–2007) is considered to be among the rare elite of classical guitar makers. While he studied the guitar with Daniel Fortea, a pupil of Francisco Tárrega, he developed an interest in lutherie, and in 1954 he became an apprentice guitar maker – and eventually the head artisan – in the famous José Ramírez workshop. In 1969 he left Ramírez to establish his own workshop in Madrid. Though deeply rooted in the old Madrid school, he was a great innovator who developed his own strutting systems and construction methods, giving his guitars strong basses, clear trebles and a wide range of tone colors. He also built the famous 10-string guitar that Narciso Yepes played until his death.

Paulino Bernabé II

His son, Paulino Bernabé II (born in Madrid in 1960), grew up above his father's workshop and began his career at 17 as his father's apprentice. Father and son worked together for some 30 years, and since his father's passing Paulino Bernabé II has continued the family tradition of guitar building.
